Ariel Hacohen

Art in times of war

Visual artist Ariel Hacohen (b. 1993) resides in Jerusalem, where his practice encompasses photography, video, sculpture, and computer-based 3D modelling. He completed his BFA degree at the Department of Photography of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. From 2020-2022, he was awarded the Clore Scholarship for his Master’s studies at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London. His work is displayed as part of the Knesset’s permanent collection as well as at the new Bezalel Academy campus in Jerusalem, among other collections.


Hacohen’s oeuvre focuses on the interface between history, memory, and the body. His works contain Classical and archaeological elements as well as archival materials that have undergone digitization, blurring, erasure, and replication.

He combines and merges multiple layers of photographs to create images that appear both multi-temporal and timeless. In his video works,


Hacohen enacts diverse characters such as orchestra musicians or sportsmen, using his own body as a platform to explore body image, national identity and gender roles.Hacohen is the recipient of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation (AICF) Scholarship, the Bezalel-Presser Award for Excellence in Photography, the Yossi Breger Award, and the Hecht Foundation Prize for Young Artists. Over the past year he has lectured at the Bezalel Center in Ofakim, and has been a guest lecturer at the Bezalel Academy and Shenkar College. Hacohen is a participant in the long-term Residency Program of the Art Cube Artists’ Studios in Talpiot, Jerusalem.
