Naama Shohet

Art in time of war

Naama Shohet, born in 1993 in Jerusalem, is a documentary video artist and animator. She is a graduate of the Screen-Based Arts Department at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Shohet works as a video editor and animator, and serves as a member of judging committees for film funds and film festivals. Her works have been exhibited in galleries and at film festivals, and have received production grants and awards from various organizations.

Shohet’s works are deeply personal, taking the form of autobiographical narratives woven into her works. These stories are set against a backdrop of public and political discourse, striving to confront and reshape conventional views on historical and familial narratives, immigration, belonging, loss and collective memory. Her perspective as a young woman is particularly poignant, reflecting a reality steeped in violence and mourning.

Shohet’s hybrid video works consist of a multidisciplinary language of cinema, visual arts and cut-out animation, aspiring to create a holistic screen experience. “The Monument” is the product of an in-depth exploration of Israeli visual culture, its every aspect steeped in commemoration and grief. The work engages in a visual, thematic dialogue that oscillates between past and present, illustrating the loops of Israeli reality on the one hand and the shattered relationship between her parents on the other, questioning whether there is any sense in bringing new life into such a reality.

Shohet has been awarded the Sir Jack Lyons Outstanding Students Award by the Jerusalem Foundation (2018), the Sharet Scholarship from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation (2019), the Ostrovsky Prize for Experimental Cinema at the Jerusalem Film Festival (2018), and the Best Experimental Film Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival (2019), among other grants and acknowledgments.
