Ruth Colian

Prize for Promising Groundbreaking Initiative
Colian was a boarding-school child who successfully traversed a difficult life course and became the powerful voice of a woman who is not prepared to follow the crowd. She became newly religious and currently lives as an ultra-Orthodox woman with a Bachelor of Law degree and is studying towards a Master of Law.

She is a social activist who wants to help those who are weaker than she, to effect change, and to correct the wrongdoings of the world. She chairs the ultra-Orthodox women’s list “U’Bizchutan” – ultra-Orthodox women fomenting change, who turn to the ultra-Orthodox public and call for the integration of women in ultra-Orthodox political parties and public activities.
Ruth Colian is a fighter for justice and leads campaigns such as raising awareness of breast cancer among ultra-Orthodox women. The mortality rates in this sector are relatively high because they are not aware of the significance of early diagnosis. She has petitioned the High Court of Justice against granting public funding to political parties that exclude women and she was the first ultra-Orthodox woman in Petach Tikvah to run for a seat on the municipal council.

Her aim is for a party of ultra-Orthodox women to compete in all elections until ultra-Orthodox women will be faithfully represented in the Israeli Knesset.
