Prize Regulations

Chapter 1: The Prize

1.  The Rappaport prize for “Israeli artists” is awarded annually to selected Israeli artists who have achieved a momentous accomplishment in the fields
     of plastic arts and video art. The prize is awarded by the Bruce and Ruth Rappaport Foundation, in association with the Tel Aviv Museum of Art
     (hereinafter: “the Foundation” and “the Museum”).

2.  The Prize is comprised of two prizes that will be awarded annually in two categories:

a.  To an Established Artist with proven artistic achievement (hereinafter: “Prize A”).

b.  To a Young and Promising Artist (hereinafter: “Prize B”).

(Hereinafter, jointly: “the Prizes”).

3.  The sum of the prize: the prize is comprised of two components, a monetary reward and partial funding of a solo exhibition at the Museum.

Monetary reward: $35,000 for the Prize A laureate; $15,000 for the Prize B laureate.

Exhibition funding: total of $90,000 for both Prize laureates' exhibitions.

4.  Criteria for receiving the prize:

4.1       Prize A –

4.1.1   The artist’s winning creation, (which rewarded him/her with the prize), is to have been created throughout the course of his/her years of activity.

4.1.2   The applicant must be engaged in the arts for at least 7 years, prior to applying for the prize.

4.2       Prize B –

4.2.1   The applicant completed his/her studies in one of the higher education institutions, sometime during the past three years.

4.2.2   The artist’s winning creation is to have been created throughout the course of his/her years of activity.

5.   The prizes will be awarded to two individual laureates, only once a year, and not to institutions or organizations.

 

Chapter 2: Undertakings of the Prize Laureates

6.  Laureates of the prize will donate one art piece chosen by the Museum to the Museum’s Israeli art collection, named after Ruth and Bruce Rappaport

     at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. A sign will be posted next to each work saying “Bruce and Ruth Rappaport Established Israeli Artist / Young and Promising

     Israeli Artist Prize (+ the year the prize was granted)”.

7.  The prize laureates are required to attend the Rappaport Prize Awards Ceremony and to personally collect their prize. The awards ceremony takes

     place in March of each year at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

8.  It is the responsibility of the prize laureates to coordinate their taxes and /or to inquire about any tax levies which may accrue as a result of being

      awarded the prizes and /or the payment.

9.  The prize laureates must indicate in all their publications and in their gallery’s promotional advertising that they are laureates of the Rappaport Prize

      Award. Furthermore, they must also refer to the solo exhibition which was presented in honor of winning the prize.

10.  The prize laureates must indicate that they are Rappaport Prize laureates in their resume.

11.  The prize laureates must cooperate with media interviews regarding winning the Rappaport Art Prize Award.

12.  The prize laureates must partake in an exhibition with all the other prize laureates of the Award which takes place once every 10 years.

13.  During the exhibition, the prize laureates must participate in a gallery dialogue, twice, with the visiting audience, either exclusively or together with
       the exhibition’s curator.

 

Chapter 3: Prize Applicants 

14.  Prize applicants must be Israeli citizens and residents who are actively engaged in art, with the majority of their artwork created in Israel.

15.  Former laureates of the Foundation’s prize are not eligible to reapply.

16.  Per its discretion, the Rappaport Prize Committee may nominate suitable candidates for the prize, even after the deadline for submitting candidates

       has passed.

17.  Under special circumstances, the Committee may approve candidates who do not meet the criteria of sub-article 14.

 

Chapter 4: The Committee and the Professional Center

18.  The selection of recommended candidates for the prize will be done by the Israeli Artist Rappaport Prize Committee (hereinafter: “the Committee”).

19.  Committee composition – the committee will comprise seven committee members; four members will be selected by the Bruce and Ruth Rappaport

       Foundation and the other three members will be selected by the Museum. 

As indicated in Appendix A of the Regulations.

20.  The Committee members will serve for an indefinite period of time. Every so often, the Bruce and Ruth Rappaport Foundation may terminate the

        appointment of a committee member and appoint someone else, per its discretion.

21.  Each year, one of the Committee members will serve as its chairperson.

22.  The Committee is entitled to invite curators or other experts to participate in its meetings.

23.  The roles of the Committee:

23.1      Each year the Committee will select the prize laureates and in order to do so the Committee will screen the different applicants with the
              help of the Committee’s professional center.

23.2     The Committee will be able to appoint ad-hoc judging committees in order to get their opinion on the recommended candidates; further, the       Committee will define the work of each of these judging committees. 

23.3      The Committee will advise with additional experts as it sees fit.

23.4      Each Committee meeting must be documented through meeting minutes and protocol; information on the applicants and meeting
              protocols will remain confidential.

24.   The roles of the professional center at the Museum

24.1      Conducts initial screening of candidates who do not meet the prerequisites.

24.2      Contacts applicants regarding incomplete applications to clarify and /or add and /or remove and /or elaborate, etc. 

24.3      Updates applicants regarding the Committee’s decisions.

25.  The Committee’s administrative coordinator – a member of the Museum’s staff and per the Museum’s choice.

 

Chapter 5: Procedure for Nominating Candidates

26.  Eligibility for nominating candidates:

26.1      Anyone may apply or nominate someone else for the Prize.

26.2      Nominations of candidates will be made by individuals and not by institutions or organizations.

27.  Submission of written candidate nominations

27.1      Each nomination will be submitted in writing, in either Hebrew or English, along with complementary materials which will assist with inquiring

             about the candidate, as is detailed in section 28 of this chapter.

27.2      Each year the management of the Rappaport Prize will advertise a “call for applications”, welcoming the nomination of candidates for the

  prize, with a specified deadline.

28.  Candidate nominations for the prize will include the following:

28.1      A brief CV of the nominee (according to the instructions posted on the Rappaport Prize website);

28.2      [cancelled].

28.3      Digital portfolio comprised of 30 images of the nominee’s artwork as a single PDF file.

28.4      A photocopy of the nominee’s ID card.

29.  The applications must be submitted online in accordance with the instructions on the Rappaport Prizes website: www.rappaport-prize.org.il .

30.  The applications are to be submitted by the date that is indicated in the “call for applications”.

 

Chapter 6: Procedure for Selecting Candidates

31.  The selection procedure will be left to the Committee’s discretion.

32.  The selection procedure will be published each year as an appendix to the regulations, no later than February of that year.

 

Chapter 7: Awarding the Prize

33.  The Prize will be awarded at the Rappaport Awards Ceremony, which includes additional prizes with regard to other varying fields and will be
        presented by representatives of the Rappaport family. (The other prizes awarded at this ceremony are the Rappaport Prize for Women Generating
        Change in Israeli Society, and the Rappaport Prize for Excellence in the Field of Biomedical Research, in collaboration with the Rappaport Institute at
        the Technion).

34.  The prize laureates and their family members will be invited to the ceremony (10 invitations).

 

Chapter 8: General Guidelines

35.  The announcement of the laureates will be published prior to the awards ceremony.

36.  The prize will be awarded each year during the month of March.

37.  The prize will be awarded at a festive event, held by the Bruce and Ruth Rappaport Foundation and which will give manifestation to the goals of the

        prize.

38.  In the event of a conflict of interest involving any one of the Committee members, the issue will be raised before the Committee, which will handle 

        each claim individually. 

39.  The Rappaport Prize logo will appear in all the publications produced by the Museum that are related to the Rappaport prizes (billboards / catalogs /
        in the exhibition design / advertisements / PR, etc.).


2024 Prize - special instructions

The proposal must include:

•  A descriptive text of up to 500 words

•  Budget breakdown that covers all production costs

•  Timeframe for the realization of the work

•  A resume

The proposal should be submitted in PDF format as one document that includes all the requested information, as well as images and/or links to previous works.

• Images - if the work is already in the making or reference images and/or links to previous works.

The application forms must be submitted through the website no later than March 15, 2024.

The Prize laureates will be announced during April 2024 and the Prizes will be awarded in June 2024.


Nota Bene:

Copies of the winning videos will be given to the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Collection at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art will be entitled to display the winning videos in coordination with the Prize laureate.

The Museum will have the first right to display the video.

If it is not displayed by the Museum within 18 months from the date of its completion, the laureate may display it in another exhibition space.
