Prof. Yaakov Nahmias

Rappaport Prize for Young Israeli Researcher
Prof. Yaakov Nahmias, from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, made a breakthrough in the field of medicinewhen he identified a small molecule in grapefruit which was found to have the ability to kill viruses in the human body. Prof. Nahmias’ discovery is extremelybeneficial for people with diabetes.
The molecule, occurring naturally in grapefruit and developed by Prof. Nahmias, enables the body to absorb antioxidants at a rate that is eleven times higher than without the molecule, and this antioxidant positively affects the body. "For the first time ever we have a way of proving that nutritional supplements can change the way our body responds to a meal," says Prof. Nahmias.
