Prof. Shulamit Levenberg

Prize for Established Bio-Medical Researcher
Shulamit Levenberg is a Professor at the Biomedical Engineering Department at the Technion. She is currently the Dean of the Department and the head of the Schneur center for Diabetes research at the Technion. Prof. Levenberg leads Tissue Engineering studies using stem cells and biodegradable scaffolds to engineer vascularized tissue constructs. Her breakthrough discoveries involve in vitro vascularization of engineered tissues (including skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle and pancreatic tissues), where upon implantation the engineered vessels anastomose with the host vasculature, improving survival and perfusion of engineered grafts.
Prof. Levenberg was also the first to engineer vascularized tissue flaps, offering novel reconstruction techniques using engineered tissue constructs. Her pioneer work demonstrated the effect of scaffold stiffness and tensile forces on early differentiation and organization of stem cells in 3D constructs, and on alignment of vessel networks in engineered tissues. She recently developed unique stem cell engineered tissue constructs that induce the regeneration and repair of injured spinal cords. Prof. Levenberg is an internationally recognized leader in the field. She won prestigious awards and her discoveries inspire the scientific community and the general public.
