Dr. Rachel Adato

Rappaport Honorary Prize for Lifetime Achievement

Dr. Rachel Adato has M.D. from Hadassah Medical School of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, MBA from the Hebrew University, and LLB from Ono Academic College. In her widespread, long-standing activity, she sets an example for initiative, professionalism, and perseverance influencing women in various ages, sectors, and cultures in Israel and worldwide.

Dr. Adato's first breakthrough was in the struggle she conducted upon completion of her medical studies, when she tried to intern in gynecology, a discipline that was blocked for women until then. Rachel succeeded in being admitted to this internship thereby becoming the first woman in a gynecology residency in Jerusalem, and later the first licensed female gynecologist. This opened the door for additional female doctors to intern in gynecology. Another precedence she set was when she was appointed as Deputy Director of Hadassah Medical Center thereby becoming the first female physician appointed to direct a hospital.

Since 1997, her "flagship" activity focuses on promoting women's health with impressing accomplishments in this field: she founded the National Council on Women's Health, took part in the establishment of women's health centers across the country focusing on a different approach to women's health in the ultra-orthodox and Arabic sectors, and promoted the inclusion of unique medications for women that have been approved as medical benefits (such as vaccines for Papilloma Virus, Mammogram, and treatments for Osteoporosis). She also initiated unique academic programs for women's health which were introduced into the curriculum of general physicians and medical students.

As a Member of Knesset, Dr. Rachel Adato's activity with respect of eating disorders and anorexia and legislating a law in the field (known as the "Photoshop Law") resulted in a revolution in Israel and worldwide regarding body image and the development of eating disorders, mainly in young girls. Dealing with the law has led to increased public awareness of the twisted thin beauty model and resulted in a dramatic change in recent years regarding eating disorders. Twenty five years have passed since Dr. Adato raised the issue of women's health for the first time. The development in gender medicine since then until now is the most prominent evidence of her great contribution in this field.
